A practical introduction to observing the events, responses and behaviour of the Present-day Personality with honesty and greater impartiality.
Introspection is connected with learning to observe the tendencies, emotions, thoughts and behaviour of the Present-day Personality. Its purpose is self-knowledge: to recognise what is taking place within us with greater honesty and discrimination.
It is not self-condemnation. It begins with attentive observation and establishes the understanding needed before more detailed practice is considered.
Take real events or problems and consider what caused them, how they developed, whether they were useful and whether the response brought genuine satisfaction.
Rather than defending or attacking the Present-day Personality, try to view its behaviour with the greater distance of an unprejudiced observer.
A systematic daily review of a small number of matters allows understanding to grow without turning the practice into self-condemnation.
Introspection is in direct relationship with the Seventh Sacred Promise: the nightly examination of whether thoughts, desires, words and actions are in harmony with the Divine Law.
The Present-day Personality is compared to an undisciplined child that must be understood and guided. The work is therefore neither indulgence nor hostility: it is patient observation, discrimination and gradual correction.
